For the third year in a row I had the pleasure of being on the judging panel for the Marketing Society awards today. It's always fun and inspiring and great to share views with the other judges.Top three takeaways from me:1. Consider how ambitious the objectives of the campaign are.2. Working with artists and organisations on various projects.One of my pet peeves is when we're not 'allowed' to celebrate the wins. I've had bosses in the past who would ask what's next instead of "allowing" me to celebrate my win. It gave me a complex not wanting to talk about my wins or I would mention them in passing so no one would pay attention to them or god forbid, they would say I'm bragging.Thankfully, I've grown out of that.So much so, I'll talk about my wins for years to come. Nick Scarpino, the senior Vice President, marketing & off premise Dining Portfolio’s HOT Dogs. He worked in digital advertising leadership roles in Google. Had a talk in TEDx talk at the University of Illinios. He mentioned about the five important things that are to be done in the marketing communication process. The The Marketing Society Scotland Star Awards nominations have just been announced. They are our industry’s ’Oscars’; held each year to celebrate excellence in all aspects of marketing. And my goodness, 40 agencies/clients have been nominated for their work across 18 categories. That’s 106 nominations in total. The winners will be announced later this year; but just to get to this point, agencies and clients have worked hard to encapsulate their successes in the hope of persuading the judges that their work deserves recognition. So congratulations to everyone who’s picked up a nomination. ‘Respect’ as they say.Speaking for ourselves, I’m delighted for our passionate team at The Union who have managed to garner no less than 11 nominations. (Which happens to be more than anyone else.) And we feature in 7 different marketing categories. Clients such as The Scottish Government, schuh, Scottish Widows , PIRC, Zero Waste Scotland and The Data Lab have all been selected. This is no accident. It can’t happen without brilliant clients, and our Unionites who care deeply about the work they do. Not to mention the effort, skill and thought that goes into preparing a strong entry.But we’re not getting carried away. With over 15 years of experience in entering these awards, we know that a nomination is a guarantee of absolutely nothing. So this was the lovely Marketing Director of the Year trophy getting wrapped up safely to be sent back to be prepared for this years winner. Today, I attended American Marketing Association of Indiana University of Pennsylvania annual panel. Seven industry professionals shared valuable knowledge and advice, including those from PPG Paints, Steelers, UPMC, American Eagle and business owners. Thank you to all the marketing panelists who took the time to visit. Also, thank you to Kira Wertz for organizing this amazing event. I’m extremely grateful to hear from these professionals.Reflecting on all the insights today, here are some key takeaways:-Saying yes to opportunities opens doors to new experiences, learning and personal growth.-Embrace continuous learning and be a sponge to information.-Being told no can be discouraging. However, you can turn a “no” or rejection into a stepping stone toward success and personal development.-Marketing is constantly evolving; embrace change and be adaptable.
